Installed on a lifeline, these mobile fall arresters are self-parking to reduce the potential fall factor, whether on an inclined or vertical surface. In case of a shock load or sudden acceleration, they “cam” the rope and arrest the fall.
The RED is a simple, yet highly effective back-up device. Thanks to the non-aggressive cams which have a positively locking spring this device is self-parking rather than self-tailing (like most rope grabs). This self-parking function is important for Rope Access work techniques as they stipulate that the back-up device should be positioned as high as practical to reduce fall factors to a minimum.
The RED makes use of 'Rotational Braking'- the more the device rotates clockwise, the greater the buildup of friction, which provides the automatic braking in the event of a fall or sudden pull on the Cows-tail.
To increase the effectiveness of the Rotational Brake in a panic situation the RED is fitted with a 'Popper' tow cord release clip which allows the device to travel smoothly down the rope with the user without overriding its ability to arrest a fall.
